Butt and Pass

Butt and pass is a construction term that is usually applied to log home construction.  Butt and pass specifically refers to having the structure around the cabin all at the same level. In other words, all the seems from different walls of your log house will match up perfectly. Then, at the corners where the logs meet, one of the runs butts up against the other - which "passes". If you think of Lincoln Logs, you can probably picture this pattern quite well.

This building technique is extremely popular amount log home kits. It contributes to overall stregnth of the structure, wall and roof of a log cabin. It also creates a tight fit between the wood that supports both walls and keep the small critters out.  It also allows for a frameless construction approach, which is what most people are going for with a log house. They are not interested in studding out walls and there is no interior space within which to hide things. This can actually become an issue for electric and plumbing runs, but that's another story altogether.
